Product switcher
The Product Switcher feature allows customers to easily switch between similar products.
It is commonly used when variations such as colors, materials, or finishes are not implemented as Shopify variants, but instead exist as separate product entries. The Product Switcher provides a direct way to navigate between these products while remaining on the product detail page, improving both consistency and usability.
1. Add the "Product switcher" block
When installing the theme, the Product Switcher block is usually enabled by default. At first, it may not display anything until the setup steps below are completed.
If the block is not visible:
Open the main Product section in the theme editor.
Add the Product Switcher block, as shown in the screenshot below.
The most important setting here is “Metafield namespace/key.” Make sure this value matches exactly the metafield that will be created in the next step. This is how the Product Switcher connects to the product data.
2. Create the metafield
Next, you need to create a product metafield.
From your Shopify admin, navigate to: Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Products
Create a new metafield with the following settings:
Type: Product → List of values
Namespace and key: You may choose a custom value if you wish (as shown in the screenshot below), but it must match the value set in the Product Switcher block settings.
The Product Switcher relies on this namespace/key to function correctly, so both values must be identical.
3. Add related products to the metafield
Open each product where you want to enable the Product Switcher.
Scroll down to the Metafields section.
Locate the newly created metafield (for example, Product switcher).
Add the related products to the list.
This process should be repeated for all related products. For best results, ensure the order of products is consistent across all related metafields.
4. Verify the result
Visit the product pages and confirm that the Product Switcher appears and works as expected.
Please note that for products where the metafield is not set, the Product Switcher block will not be displayed. This is expected behavior.
