Shipping protection
Enable an optional shipping protection fee that customers can add during checkout to cover lost or damaged shipments.
Some customers prefer extra peace of mind when placing an order, and the Shipping Protection feature provides exactly that. For a small fee (which you can fully control), customers can add shipping protection to their order to help cover damage or theft during delivery.
The option can also be enabled by default, meaning it will already be selected for customers when they view their cart. Below is an example of how this feature appears on our demo store. You can customize the colors and text to match your store’s branding and needs.
You can also change the position of the Shipping Protection block by simply moving it up or down within the Shopify theme editor.
Also, as expected, the shipping protection product will not appear as a regular cart item. Customers can only interact with it through the checkbox in the Shipping Protection block.

Configuration
Like other cart blocks, the Shipping Protection block should be enabled by default in either the Cart Drawer section or the Cart Page main section. If it’s not visible, you can add it by clicking the plus (+) icon inside the section.

Block settings
The most important setting is the Product field, which we’ll cover in the next section. This product is used to define the price of the shipping protection.
Other important settings include:
Auto add to cart When enabled, the shipping protection option will be automatically selected for customers, adding the product to the cart by default.
Price placeholder You can use the
[price]placeholder in the description text. This will automatically display the current product price, so you don’t need to hardcode it and update it later.Custom color Unlike most sections and blocks, this block allows you to choose a custom color instead of a color scheme. This is useful if you want to visually highlight the Shipping Protection option and differentiate it from other cart elements.
Create the product
To use Shipping Protection, you must create a product and assign it to the Shipping Protection block (the first setting in the block options). If no product is selected, the block will not be visible on the storefront.
Below is how we’ve configured the Shipping Protection product in our demo store. You’re free to adjust this setup based on your needs.

Important considerations:
Product price This is the amount customers will pay when they enable shipping protection.
Product image (optional) You may add an icon or image for visual clarity. If left empty, no image will be shown in the block.
Inventory settings Make sure the product has sufficient stock, or disable inventory tracking entirely so it’s always available for purchase.
Verify the results
Visit your storefront and open either the cart drawer or cart page, depending on your setup. You should see the Shipping Protection block, typically near the bottom of the cart (unless you’ve repositioned it).
If the block does not appear, check the following:
The Shipping Protection product is Active
The product is published to the Online Store sales channel
A product is selected in the block’s Product setting
Finally, test the feature thoroughly to ensure the cart total updates correctly when shipping protection is added or removed.
