Theme translation

Modify or translate the theme’s built-in languages

Every Shopify theme comes with built-in, translation-ready text strings that you can customize or translate into another language. In most cases, you won’t need to change these texts for English, as they usually contain short, general labels such as Cart, Account, Wishlist, and similar.

Even if you need to use a language that we don’t officially support, Shopify’s automatic translation is typically 99% accurate, and you’ll usually only need to fine-tune a few details manually. The automatic translation is done using the official Shopify "Translate and adapt" app (second point below).

There are two ways to manage theme translations, depending on your needs.

1. Edit default theme content

This option is ideal if you only want to adjust text in your default language.

For example, if your store’s main language is English, you may want to change the text “Cart” to “Bag”, or slightly tweak other labels.

To do this:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes

  2. Locate our theme, click the three dots (⋯) menu

  3. Select Edit default theme content (as shown in the screenshot below)

You will then see all theme text strings organized by groups such as Accessibility, General, Collections, and more.

To quickly find a specific text, use the search feature by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner.

This method allows you to fine-tune the theme’s default wording without adding additional languages.

2. Translate using the app

This option is required if you want to translate your store into another language, or customize text per market, even when the language is the same.

For example, you might have an Australian market alongside your main English market and want to slightly adjust wording specifically for that audience.

To do this, first install Shopify’s official app Translate & Adaptarrow-up-right.

Then open the app and select the language you want to edit from the dropdown (as shown in the screenshot below)
